Our hands-down favorite film of 2012 was the sprawling and ambitious Cloud Atlas, a stunning adaptation of a sprawling and supposedly unfilmable novel which most of America chose to pretend didn’t exist. Andy and Lana Wachowski – who wrote and directed Cloud Atlas with Tom Twkyer – currently are filming a new sci-fi action film set for release in 2014 titled Jupiter Ascending which stars Mila Kunis and Channing Tatum, but they have chosen to follow that with another sprawling sci-fi project, Sense8, that they won’t try to squeeze into a single film.
Instead of fitting the story all into a single movie, the Wachowskis – who are best known for the Matrix trilogy – are going the long-form route, teaming up with J. Michael Starczynski to create a 10-episode sci-fi drama for Netflix.
Straczynski is a veteran television writer who created Babylon 5.
Not a lot is known about the new project at this point though Sense8 was described in a statement as a global story about “minds linked and souls hunted.”
The Wachowskis said they’ve long wanted to collaborate with Straczynski.
“Several years ago, we had a late night conversation about the ways technology simultaneously unites and divides us, and out of that paradox Sense8 was born,” the siblings said in a statement released to the Hollywood Reporter.
Produced by Georgeville Television in association with Studio JMS, Sense8 is scheduled to debut on the streaming video service in late 2014.
Netflix recently has produced other long-form series, such as David Fincher/Kevin Spacey produced House of Cards. They have a handful of other series in development.
