This is supposed to be the final trailer for The Master, Paul Thomas Anderson’s upcoming drama that stars Joaquin Phoenix as a troubled veteran and Philip Seymour Hoffman as an L. Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master got pegged early on as his “Scientology movie” because Anderson let slip that one of the main characters was influenced by L. The Weinstein Co. and Paul Thomas Anderson have coughed up another opaque trailer thing that they apparently think makes The Master seem compelling and intriguingly off beat but which leaves me – like the other trailers and clips that I’ve seen – utterly indifferent. I am unmoved by all of the gushing tweets posted by people who were among the first to see Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master Friday night. I don’t doubt that it’s a great movie – we expect greatness, or something near, from the man who made Magnolia and There Will Be Blood. I just don’t put a lot of stock in the tweets.
