The Dark Knight Rises retained the top spot in the domestic box office, earning an estimated $36.4 million on its third weekend. The final chapter of Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy has now earned a total of $354.6 million domestically, which is $39 million less than The Dark Knight earned at this point in its run. Despite the shooting rampage at a midnight showing in Colorado that left 12 people dead and 70 people wounded, The Dark Knight Rises earned an estimated $162 million over the weekend, putting the movie behind only Marvel’s The Avengers and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 among highest openings ever (not adjusted for inflation).
