When Shia LaBeouf first let drop that Lars Von Trier’s upcoming Nymphomaniac wouldn’t just feature simulated sex but the real thing, he left the suggestion dangling in the air that he, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Uma Thurman, Willem Dafoe, Stellan Skarsgard,  Jamie Bell, Christian Slater and Connie Nielsen would be getting down and dirty in front of the cameras.

Stacy Martin appears in Lars Von Trier's 'Nymphomaniac'Now comes word from Stacy Martin, a lesser known actress in the movie, that the heavy lifting (and heavy breathing) is being performed by “porn doubles.”

“The porn stars finish the job off for you,” Martin told the Independent in an interview published Feb. 19, but which just came to my attention.

The movie looks back at the erotic life of a 50-year-old woman (Gainsbourg) who is a self-diagnosed nymphomaniac. Martin, 22, plays the character from the age of 15 to 31. LaBeouf plays her boyfriend. As you might imagine in a film about a nympho, they have quite a few nude scenes together.

“What scared me wasn’t the nakedness but it was interacting naked,” the actress said. Not that Martin had to worry much, she added, because the real “interacting” was left to the porn doubles.

Martin had no previous acting experience yet she apparently plays the lead character for half of the movie.

“There was a lot of pressure on me as the vehicle of his vision,” she says of the filmmaker. “I had to keep remembering that he chose me, or else I wouldn’t be there if I wasn’t capable.”

Though the story makes much of Martin’s resemblance to Gainsboug’s mother, Jane Birkin, Martin says the resemblance apparently had little to do with her getting the role because Von Trier originally did not want to hire her.

“I got it because I did a good screen test,” she said.

The movie will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May.
