Robert Redford stars in and directed 'The Company You Keep'

Robert Redford’s new movie is titled The Company You Keep. It looks like another one of the earnest, socially conscious dramas that Redford is known for, but this may have a better chance of finding an audience than some of the recent films that he has directed.

Susan Sarandon stars in 'The Company You Keep'

For one thing, it’s got a helluva cast. In addition to Redford, the movie stars Susan Sarandon, Nick Nolte, Shia LaBeouf, Chris Cooper, Julie Christie, Brendan Gleeson, Terrence Howard, Richard Jenkins, Anna Kendrick, Brit Marling, Stanley Tucci and Sam Elliott.

Of course, big names don’t guarantee an audience. Redford’s 2007 drama, Lions for Lambs, featured Tom Cruise and Meryl Streep, in addition to Redford himself, and nobody went to see it.

The Company You Keep may be different because it actually seems to have a story that can be told visually, in the language of cinema. Adapted from a novel by Neil Gordon, it is a thriller about a former member of the Weather Underground (Redford) who is wanted on murder charges who goes on the run after a young journalist (LaBeouf) discovers his identity.

The movie plays at the Toronto International Film Festival this month. It doesn’t yet have a release date.
