Amy Adams and Philip Seymour Hoffman star in Paul Thomas Anderson's 'The Master'

This is supposed to be the final trailer for The Master, Paul Thomas Anderson’s upcoming drama that stars Joaquin Phoenix as a troubled veteran and Philip Seymour Hoffman as an L. Ron Hubbard-like founder of a new religion. The film is being viewed as a potential big Oscar contender.

If this is to be the last trailer, I’m fine with that. Let them quit while they’re ahead. This is the first trailer or clip that I’ve seen that makes The Master seem like something more than a curiosity.

Anderson doesn’t make straight-forward, easy-to-synopsize little tales, which makes them very difficult to market. This is the first video glimpse of The Master that I’ve seen in which we’re able to discern the outlines of a story that a film could be built upon. I always assumed it was there. It’s just that you couldn’t see it in the earlier marketing materials. I didn’t think the earlier clips and trailers did the movie much good.

The Master opens Sept. 14 in limited release and starts to expand on Sept. 21.
