Samuel L. Jackson plays Sgt. Fury in 'The Avengers'

The Avengers is breaking box office records this weekend and it has won accolades from the vast majority of critics, but Samuel L. Jackson, who plays Sgt. Fury, has declared jihad against one of the few prominent movie critics who dissed the movie.

“#Avengers fans,NY Times critic AO Scott needs a new job! Let’s help him find one! One he can ACTUALLY do!” Jackson tweeted on Thursday.

A.O. Scott is one of the most thoughtful and level-headed film critics out there, and I don’t disagree with his criticisms of The Avengers The movie is marred by the “grinding, hectic emptiness” and “bloated cynicism” that is endemic to the comic book superhero movie genre. These faults are what I found so objectionable in the parade of origin stories that led up to The Avengers, and it is why I so thoroughly hated The Dark Knight, the sequel to possibly the best movie of the whole superhero canon, Batman Begins.

This being said, I still enjoyed The Avengers. Jackson is being thin-skinned and jerkish (or maybe he’s just trying to rally his fan base). Apparently, now he and Scott are still trading jabs.

Most thinking people who liked the movie liked it despite its glaring faults, I think.

The movie is breaking box office records this weekend. Let it go, Sammy.

As for Scott, the Pulitzer Prize panel that awards the criticism award will gain legitimacy in my book when they recognize how good he is.
