The Avengers blasted its way to the top of the box office charts for the third weekend in a row. Battleship and Sasha Baron Cohen’s The Dictator didn’t stand a chance.

The Marvel 3D superhero fight fest easily won the weekend, earning an estimated $55 million, bringing its 17-day total domestic box office gross to $457 million. The movie’s closest competitor, Battleship, earned an estimated $25.3 million. The Dictator comes in third with $17.4 million.

Next up: Men in Black 3 next weekend. How do you think Will Smith, Tommie Lee Jones and Josh Brolin will do against the Marvel superhero juggernaut?

'The Avengers' box office showdown with 'Avatar' and 'Dark Knight'

Box Office Mojo has posted an interesting feature that compares current top releases with similar movies, showing where they each stand at this point in their release schedules. The Avengers‘ $457 million domestic 17-day total easily surpasses both the $393.7 million that The Dark Knight had earned at this point and Avatar‘s $352 million 17-day total. Avatar, of course, went on to become the highest grossing movie of all time.

Will The Avengers‘ challenge Avatar‘s record? What do you think?

The Avengers is now the sixth highest grossing movie of all time domestically and the fourth highest grosser when you add international markets.
