Argo home video

Argo, the Oscar frontrunner that has been vacuuming nearly every award in sight in recent weeks, is coming out on DVD tomorrow.

Is it the best movie of the year? Not in my opinion, but it is a solid fact-based thriller that tackles an important historical subject in an engaging, entertaining way.

The film is set during the 1979 Iranian revolution when 52 American embassy workers were taken hostage. Argo tells the little-known story of how the CIA, with some help from Hollywood, spirited out of the country a small number of United States citizens who managed to escape the U.S. embassy during the siege.

Dramas set in the Middle East typically fade quickly from view. Argo won an audience – and awards – because it is an edge-of-your-seat thriller that also happens to be quite funny at times. The Hollywood angle (and addition of John Goodman and Alan Arkin) helped it crossover to mainstream appeal.

Ben Affleck, who stars and also directs (from a script by Chris Terrio), has developed into a smart, efficient filmmaker.
